A partial list of projects sponsored and funded by the Simi Valley Police Foundation:

• Canine Unit: The Simi Valley Police Foundation has purchased 10 canines for the Simi Valley Police Department since the inception of the Canine Unit in 1981. The K-9 Program is designed to utilize police dogs and handlers specially trained in crime scene investigation, missing persons and building searches, suspect apprehension, narcotics detection and crowd control.



• D.A.R.E. Program: Drug Abuse Resistance Education is a highly acclaimed program which gives children the skills they need to avoid involvement in drugs, gangs and violence. A portable PA system was purchased for this program. In addition, each year the Simi Valley Police Foundation teams with the Simi Valley Education Foundation to provide D.A.R.E. graduates with t-shirts upon their graduation.



• Every 15 Minutes: The Simi Valley Police Foundation sponsors this two-day program which focuses on high school juniors and seniors challenging them to think about drinking, driving, personal safety, the responsibility of making mature decisions and the impact their decisions have on family, friends and many others. This program is offered at Royal High School and Simi High School on alternate years.



• STTOP Trailer: The Sheriff's Teen Traffic Offender Program seeks to address the factors that contribute to traffic collisions that involve teen drivers. These factors include driver inexperience, over confidence and risk taking behavior. A custom-built trailer displaying a vehicle recently involved in a significant traffic collision is outfitted with several video monitors that present safety information, victim statements and Every 15 Minutes videos. The STTOP trailer is used to support educational programs at local high schools, community events and police department functions.



• Crime Prevention: Anti-theft devices for cars were purchased by the Simi Valley Police Foundation. These devices are given free of charge to residents at Crime Prevention meetings and events. The Foundation shares the Simi Valley Police Department's concern for the personal safety of its citizens, as well as the safety of their personal property.



• Police Officer Recruitment: Recognizing the on-going need for recruitment, the Simi Valley Police Foundation financially supported the development of a police officer recruitment video.



• S.W.A.T.: The Simi Valley Police Foundation helped in sending seven members of the department's S.W.A.T. Team to participate in a state-wide "Best in the West" SWAT competition. The competition was an extended training session testing the team's preparation and skill level. Out of 37 teams competing, many from large jurisdictions with full-time tactical units, the Simi Valley Police Department's S.W.A.T. Team placed second overall making them eligible for the national S.W.A.T. competition in Colorado.



• Chaplain Program: Personal body armor was purchased for the Simi Valley Police Department's chaplains who volunteer during critical incidents.



• Safe Harbor: The Simi Valley Police Foundation funded the replacement of playground equipment at Safe Harbor East located in Simi Valley. Safe Harbor is a tool used by law enforcement to provide a safe and non-threatening environment for victims of crime.

While the City of Simi Valley is responsible for supplying the Police Department with the tools and resources it requires, the Foundation stands ready to assist the department in other areas, such as:

• Educating seniors against potential scams
• Educating community members about identity theft and how to avoid it
• Issues of personal and child safety.

Where the Foundation can educate citizens about how to avoid crime, whether to persons, or personal or business property, we support our Police Department.
